How to Use Google Maps for Directions

Get turn-by-turn directions to anywhere using the free Google Maps app on your phone.

Open Google Maps

Find the Google Maps app on your phone (it has a colorful map pin icon). If you do not have it, download it for free from the App Store or Google Play Store.

Search for a destination

Tap the search bar at the top and type where you want to go. You can type an address, a business name (like "Walgreens"), or a general place (like "gas station near me").

Tap Directions

After selecting your destination, tap the blue "Directions" button. Google Maps will show you the best route and how long it will take to get there.

Choose how you are traveling

At the top of the screen, you can choose between driving (car icon), transit (bus icon), walking (person icon), or rideshare. Pick the one that matches how you are getting there.

Quick Tip

If you take public transit, Google Maps will show you which bus or train to take, where to get on, and when to get off.

Start navigation

Tap the "Start" button to begin turn-by-turn directions. Your phone will speak directions out loud so you do not have to look at the screen while driving.

Warning

Never hold your phone while driving. Use a phone mount or have a passenger hold the phone for you.
