How to Use the Libby App for Library Books

Borrow free e-books and audiobooks from your local library using the Libby app.

    1

    Download the Libby app

    ~15s
Search for "Libby" in the App Store or Google Play Store. Download it for free. Libby is made by OverDrive and connects to your local public library.
    2

    Add your library card

    ~21s
Open Libby and tap "Find My Library." Search for your library by name or location. Then enter your library card number. If you do not have a library card, many libraries let you sign up for one online for free.

    Quick Tip

Do not have a library card? Visit your local library in person or check their website. Many libraries now offer instant digital cards.

    3

    Browse for books

    ~15s
Browse by category, search for a specific title or author, or check out curated collections. You can borrow e-books (to read) and audiobooks (to listen to) — all for free.
    4

    Borrow a book

    ~15s
Tap "Borrow" on any available book. It will be added to your shelf for 14-21 days (depending on your library). If a book is checked out by someone else, tap "Place a Hold" and you will be notified when it is available.
    5

    Read or listen

    ~17s
Open your borrowed book in the Libby app. For e-books, swipe to turn pages. For audiobooks, press play and listen. Libby remembers your place if you close the app.

    Quick Tip

You can also send borrowed Kindle books to your Kindle app or device. Look for the "Read with Kindle" option when borrowing.

    6

    Books return automatically

    ~15s
You never have to worry about late fees. Libby automatically returns books when the lending period ends. You can also return them early if you finish before the due date.
