How to Use Signal for Private Messaging

Send encrypted messages and make private calls with Signal — one of the most secure messaging apps.

    1

    Download Signal

    ~15s
Search for "Signal" in the App Store or Google Play Store. Download it for free. Signal is used by millions of people who want extra privacy for their messages.
    2

    Register your phone number

    ~15s
Open Signal and enter your phone number. You will receive a verification code by text. Enter the code, then set your name and profile picture.
    3

    Start a conversation

    ~15s
Tap the pencil button to start a new message. Signal will show contacts from your phone who also use Signal. Select someone to start chatting.
    4

    Send messages and media

    ~18s
Type your message and tap send. You can also send photos, voice messages, files, and your location. Everything is automatically encrypted, meaning only you and the person you are talking to can read it.

    Quick Tip

Signal also has disappearing messages. Turn this on in a chat to make messages automatically delete after a set time.

    5

    Make encrypted calls

    ~15s
Tap the phone or video icon at the top of any chat to make a private, encrypted call. No one — not even Signal — can listen in on your conversation.
