How to Use WhatsApp for Messaging

Send free text messages, photos, and make video calls with WhatsApp.

    1

    Download WhatsApp

    ~15s
Search for "WhatsApp" in the App Store or Google Play Store. Download it for free and open it.
    2

    Set up your account

    ~15s
Enter your phone number. WhatsApp will send you a verification code by text message. Enter the code to verify your number. Then add your name and a profile photo if you like.
    3

    Find your contacts

    ~15s
WhatsApp automatically finds people in your phone contacts who also use WhatsApp. You will see their names in the Chats tab. Tap the new message button (pencil or plus icon) to start a conversation.
    4

    Send a message

    ~21s
Tap on a contact to open a chat. Type your message in the text box at the bottom and tap the send button (arrow icon). You can also tap the camera icon to send a photo or the microphone icon to send a voice message.

    Quick Tip

Voice messages are great if you do not want to type. Just hold the microphone button, speak, and release to send.

    5

Make a video or voice call

    ~15s
In any chat, tap the phone icon for a voice call or the video camera icon for a video call. WhatsApp calls are free — they use Wi-Fi or your data plan, not your phone minutes.
    6

    Create a group chat

    ~15s
Tap the new message button, then "New Group." Select the people you want to add, give the group a name (like "Family" or "Book Club"), and tap Create. Now everyone in the group can see messages from everyone else.
