    How to Use the Kindle App for E-Books

    Read books on your phone or tablet using the free Kindle app from Amazon.

    Download the Kindle app

    Search for "Kindle" in the App Store or Google Play Store. Download it for free. Sign in with your Amazon account.

    Buy or find free books

    Go to amazon.com on your phone or computer and search for Kindle books. Many classic books are free. When you buy or download a book, it automatically appears in your Kindle app.

    Search for "free Kindle books" on Amazon to find thousands of free titles, including classics like Pride and Prejudice and Sherlock Holmes.

    Open a book and start reading

    In the Kindle app, tap on any book cover to open it. Swipe left to go to the next page or swipe right to go back a page.

    Make the text bigger

    Tap the center of the screen to show the menu. Tap the "Aa" button to change the font size, font style, and background color. Make the text as large as you need for comfortable reading.

    Quick Tip

    Try the sepia (tan) background color for easier reading. It is gentler on the eyes than bright white.

    Use bookmarks and highlights

    Tap and hold on any word to look up its definition, highlight it, or add a note. Tap the bookmark icon in the top corner to save your place. You can find all your bookmarks and highlights in the menu.
