How to Use Voice Typing Instead of the Keyboard

Speak instead of type — your phone and computer can convert your voice to text accurately and quickly.

    1

    Voice typing on iPhone

    ~19s
Open any app where you type (Messages, Notes, Email). Tap the text field so the keyboard appears. Tap the microphone icon on the keyboard (bottom-left or bottom-right). Start speaking clearly. Your words will appear as text. Tap the microphone again to stop. Say "period" for a period, "comma" for a comma, "new line" for a new paragraph.

    Voice typing on Android

    ~16s
Open any app with a text field. Tap the text field so the keyboard appears. Tap the microphone icon (usually in the top row of the keyboard or the bottom). Speak clearly and your words will appear. Say punctuation out loud: "period," "comma," "question mark," "exclamation point."
    3

    Voice typing on Windows

    ~15s
Press the Windows key + H to start voice typing anywhere on your computer. A small microphone toolbar will appear. Start speaking. Press Windows + H again to stop. This works in any application: Word, email, search bars, and web browsers.

    Voice typing on Mac

    ~15s
Press the Fn key twice (or the microphone key on newer keyboards) to start dictation. Speak your text. Press Fn again to stop. If this does not work, enable it: System Settings, Keyboard, Dictation, turn it on.

    Tips for better results

    ~27s
Speak at a natural pace (not too fast, not too slow). Speak punctuation: say "period" "comma" "question mark" "new paragraph" "new line." Review and correct errors after you finish speaking — it is faster than fixing mistakes one by one. Use in a quiet room for best accuracy.

    Quick Tip

Voice typing is especially helpful if you have arthritis or difficulty with small keyboards. It is also much faster than typing for many people — most can speak 3 times faster than they type.
