    Search for your destination

    Go to vrbo.com or open the free Vrbo app. Enter your destination in the search bar — a city, beach area, state park region, or even a specific address. Enter your check-in and check-out dates and the number of guests. Tap "Search."

    Filter results to find the right property

    Use the filters to narrow your search: price range per night, property type (cabin, beach house, condo), number of bedrooms/bathrooms, pet-friendly, pool, hot tub, beachfront, etc. Sort results by "Relevance," "Price," or "Top Reviewed."

    Review a listing before booking

    Tap any property to see the full listing. Read the description carefully — check the location on the map, look through all photos, read the house rules (check-in time, pet policy, smoking, quiet hours), and read reviews from past guests. Pay special attention to any reviews mentioning cleanliness, accuracy of the listing, and owner responsiveness.

    Warning

    Read the cancellation policy before booking. "Strict" policies may not refund if you cancel, while "Moderate" policies offer partial refunds.

    Understand the total cost

    The nightly rate shown in search results does not include all fees. When you click on a property and enter your dates, scroll to the "Price Details" section. You will see: nightly rate × number of nights + cleaning fee + service fee + taxes. The service fee goes to Vrbo. The cleaning fee goes to the host. Make sure you are comparing total costs, not just nightly rates.

    Book the property

    For Instant Book properties: click "Book Now," enter payment information, and confirm. For Request-to-Book properties: click "Request to Book," enter your payment information, and send a message introducing yourself. The owner has 24 hours to accept or decline. Your card is not charged until the owner accepts.

    Vrbo (pronounced "VER-boh," which stands for Vacation Rentals by Owner) is one of the largest vacation rental platforms in the world, owned by Expedia Group. It lets you rent entire homes, cabins, beach houses, condos, and cottages — anywhere from a weekend to several months.

    Unlike a hotel, a vacation rental gives you the whole property to yourself. You get a kitchen to cook meals, multiple bedrooms for families or groups, and often a yard or private amenities. For families or groups of people traveling together, rentals often cost less per person than multiple hotel rooms.

    Vrbo is similar to Airbnb but focuses entirely on whole-property rentals. You will not find shared rooms or "rent a couch" listings on Vrbo. Every listing is an entire home or unit.

    Vrbo has over 2 million properties in 190 countries. Popular property types include beach houses, mountain cabins, lakefront homes, and city apartments.

    To book on Vrbo, you create a free account, search by destination and dates, and either send a booking request to the owner or (for "Instant Book" properties) book right away like a hotel. Payments go through Vrbo, which holds funds until after check-in for buyer protection.

    The Vrbo app is free on iPhone and Android. You can also use vrbo.com on any computer.
