How to Back Up Your Windows Computer

Protect your files, photos, and documents by setting up automatic backups on Windows.

    1

    Why backups matter

    ~15s
Hard drives fail, computers get stolen, and ransomware can lock your files. Regular backups mean you never lose important documents, photos, or memories. Set it up once, and it works automatically.
    2

    OneDrive backup (easiest)

    ~19s
Windows 11 includes OneDrive built in. Sign in with your Microsoft account. Right-click the OneDrive icon (cloud, bottom-right taskbar) > Settings > Sync and Backup > Manage Backup. Select Desktop, Documents, and Pictures.

    Quick Tip

Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. If you are still on Windows 10, consider upgrading to Windows 11 for continued security updates.

    3

    How OneDrive works

    ~15s
Files in your backed-up folders automatically sync to Microsoft's cloud. Access them from any device at onedrive.com. 5 GB free storage; Microsoft 365 includes 1 TB ($6.99/month).
    4

    External drive backup

    ~15s
Connect an external USB hard drive ($40-80 for 1-2 TB). Go to Settings > System > Storage > Advanced Storage Settings > Backup Options > Back Up Using File History. Select the drive and turn on.
    5

    File History

    ~15s
File History automatically saves copies of your files every hour. If you accidentally delete or change a file, right-click it > Properties > Previous Versions to restore an older copy.
    6

    System Image backup

    ~15s
For a complete backup (including Windows itself): Control Panel > Backup and Restore (Windows 7) > Create a System Image. This lets you restore your entire computer if something goes very wrong.
    7

    The 3-2-1 rule

    ~15s
Keep 3 copies of important files, on 2 different types of storage, with 1 copy offsite (cloud). Example: original files on your PC, File History to external drive, and OneDrive for cloud backup.
