    How to Use Windows Firewall

Understand and configure the built-in Windows firewall to protect your computer from network threats.

    1

    What is a firewall?

    ~15s
A firewall monitors network traffic and blocks unauthorized connections. Windows Firewall is built in and turned on by default. It protects your computer from hackers and malware trying to access it from the internet.
    2

    Check firewall status

    ~15s
Search "Windows Security" > Firewall & Network Protection. All three profiles (Domain, Private, Public) should show "Firewall is on." If any shows off, click it and turn it on.
    3

    Allow an app through

    ~15s
If a program needs internet access and the firewall blocks it: Windows Security > Firewall > Allow an App Through Firewall. Find the app and check the boxes for Private and/or Public networks.
    4

    Block an app

    ~15s
To prevent an app from accessing the internet: uncheck its boxes in the allowed apps list. Or use Advanced Settings to create a specific outbound rule blocking the program.
    5

    Network profiles

    ~15s
Private: for home/office networks you trust. Public: for coffee shops and airports (more restrictive). Windows asks which to use when you connect to a new network. Choose Public when in doubt.
    6

    Don't disable it

    ~15s
Never turn off Windows Firewall unless specifically troubleshooting. Some games or VPNs may suggest it — don't. Instead, add specific exceptions for that program.
