How to Use Windows Security (Windows Defender)

Your PC has free built-in antivirus protection — here is how to use it.

    1

    Open Windows Security

    ~15s
Search for "Windows Security" in the Start menu. This app protects your PC from viruses, malware, and threats — it comes free with Windows.
    2

    Run a Quick Scan

    ~15s
Click Virus & Threat Protection, then Quick Scan. This checks your most common files for threats. It runs in the background while you work.
    3

    Scan a specific file

    ~15s
Right-click any file or folder in File Explorer, then select "Scan with Microsoft Defender." On Windows 11, you may need to click "Show more options" first.
    4

    Check real-time protection

    ~15s
Go to Virus & Threat Protection > Manage Settings. Make sure Real-time Protection is turned on. If you turn it off, it turns back on automatically for safety.
    5

    Review Firewall settings

    ~15s
Click Firewall & Network Protection. The firewall monitors network traffic and blocks suspicious connections. Keep it turned on for all network types.
    6

    Check Device Security

    ~15s
Click Device Security to see hardware protection features. Windows Security also includes Account Protection, App & Browser Control, and Family Options.
