Make sure everything is on the same Wi-Fi network

    ~30s
Your iPhone and your AirPlay speaker must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. On your iPhone, go to Settings, then Wi-Fi, and check which network you are on. Your speaker should be set up on that same network. If you are not sure how your speaker connects to Wi-Fi, check the manufacturer's app or instructions.

    Quick Tip

A HomePod connects to Wi-Fi during setup in the Home app. Once set up, it is always ready to receive AirPlay audio from any iPhone or iPad on the same network.

    2

Start playing audio on your iPhone

    ~15s
Open any audio app — Apple Music, Spotify, Podcasts, Audible, YouTube Music, or any other app that plays sound. Start playing a song, podcast episode, or any audio you want to hear on the speaker.
    3

    Open the AirPlay speaker selector

    ~25s
While audio is playing, swipe down from the top-right corner of your iPhone to open Control Center. In the music player card at the top right, tap the AirPlay icon — it looks like a small triangle pointing upward with rings around it. A list of available speakers will appear.

    Quick Tip

You can also find the AirPlay icon inside most audio apps. In Apple Music, it appears in the Now Playing screen at the bottom of the screen.

    4

    Choose your speaker

    ~26s
Tap the name of the speaker you want to use. Your iPhone or iPad will appear in the list as the default option. Tap your HomePod, AirPlay speaker, or any other listed device. The audio will switch to that speaker within a few seconds.

    Warning

If you do not see your speaker in the list, make sure it is powered on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your iPhone. Speakers that are asleep or on a different network will not appear.

    5

    Adjust the volume

    ~19s
Use the volume buttons on the side of your iPhone or drag the volume slider in Control Center to change the speaker's volume. The volume control works directly on the AirPlay speaker — you are not just changing your phone's volume. To stop AirPlay and return audio to your iPhone, open the AirPlay speaker selector again and tap iPhone.

AirPlay is Apple's built-in technology that lets your iPhone send audio — music, podcasts, audiobooks, or any other sound — wirelessly to a compatible speaker in the same room or anywhere in your home. You do not need any cables or Bluetooth pairing. As long as your iPhone and the speaker are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, AirPlay handles the connection automatically.

AirPlay works with Apple's own speakers like the HomePod and HomePod mini. It also works with many third-party speakers that advertise AirPlay 2 support — brands like Sonos, Bose, Denon, and others. If a speaker box or listing mentions "AirPlay 2," it will work with your iPhone.

The most common way to use AirPlay for audio is through the Now Playing controls on your phone. While music or audio is already playing, you tap a small icon that looks like a triangle with circles radiating from it — that is the AirPlay icon — and then choose which speaker to send the audio to.

You can also send audio to multiple speakers at the same time. If you have a HomePod in the living room and an AirPlay 2 speaker in the kitchen, you can play the same music in both rooms simultaneously.

One thing to know: AirPlay audio requires Wi-Fi, not just Bluetooth. If your Wi-Fi goes down or if you take your phone out of range of the network, the audio stream will stop. For short-distance listening where Wi-Fi is not available, regular Bluetooth headphones or speakers are a better choice.

Setup is minimal — there is nothing to install. If you have a HomePod, it was set up with the Home app and is ready immediately. Third-party AirPlay speakers are plugged in and connected to your Wi-Fi during their initial setup.
