Android Work Profile is a feature built into Android that creates a completely separate, secure space on your phone for work apps and data. Think of it as having two phones in one — a personal phone and a work phone — but on a single device. Apps and data in the work profile are isolated from your personal apps, and vice versa.
This separation matters for several reasons. Your employer may require a work profile so they can manage and secure company data on your device without having access to your personal photos, messages, and apps. From your perspective, work emails and files stay in the work profile, so when you are off the clock, you can pause the work profile and all work notifications stop — without your personal apps being affected.
Work Profile is available on Android phones running Android 5.0 or later, which covers virtually all modern Android devices.
There are two ways Work Profile gets set up. If your employer uses mobile device management software (MDM), IT may set it up for you through an enrollment process. They send you a link or an app to install that creates the profile automatically. This is common in corporate and government environments.
If you are self-employed or want to create a work profile for personal organization without IT involvement, some apps allow personal Work Profile creation. However, the most common use case is employer-managed, and the most significant feature (allowing IT to wipe the work profile without touching personal data) requires employer setup.
Once the work profile is active, you will see two versions of certain app icons — one for personal use and one for the work profile (usually marked with a small briefcase icon). Work apps only have access to work data, and personal apps only have access to personal data. The camera, contacts, and storage are all separate.
A key benefit is the ability to pause the work profile. Swiping down your notification shade or going to Settings > Accounts usually shows a toggle to pause the work profile. When paused, all work apps and notifications go quiet — a very useful boundary for evenings and weekends.
