How to Attach a Photo or File to an Email

Need to send a photo or document with an email? Here's how to attach files in Gmail and Outlook.

    1

    Start a new email

    ~15s
Open your email (gmail.com or outlook.com) and click Compose or New Message.
    2

    Click the attachment button

    ~15s
In Gmail, click the paperclip icon at the bottom. In Outlook, click "Attach file" or the paperclip icon in the toolbar.
    3

    Select your file

    ~15s
A file browser will open. Navigate to your photo or document. Click on it, then click "Open." The file name will appear in the email, showing it is attached.

    Quick Tip

Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) while clicking to select multiple files at once.

    4

    Check the size and send

    ~19s
Most email providers limit attachments to 25MB. Photos from a modern phone are usually 5-10MB each, so you can send 2-3 per email. Fill in the To address, Subject, and message, then click Send.

    Warning

If your file is too large, use Google Drive or WeTransfer instead. The email will fail silently if the attachment is over the limit.
