    Ford Pass App: Remotely Start, Lock, and Check Your Ford Vehicle

    Download and create your FordPass account

    Open the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android) and search for "FordPass." Download the official app. It has a blue oval Ford logo. Open the app and tap "Create Account." Enter your name, email address, and a password you choose. Ford will send a confirmation email — open it and click the link to verify your address before moving on.

    Use an email address you check regularly. Ford sends important alerts and account messages there.

    Add your vehicle using the VIN

    After signing in, tap "Add Vehicle" or the plus (+) icon. You will be asked for your VIN — the 17-character Vehicle Identification Number. You can find it by looking through the driver's side windshield at the bottom corner, or on your vehicle registration card. Type it in carefully, or use the app's option to scan the barcode on your registration document. The app will confirm your vehicle's year, make, and model once the VIN is accepted.

    Quick Tip

    Double-check each character of your VIN. The letters O, I, and Q are never used in a VIN, so if you see one of those, it is likely the number 0, 1, or the letter Q entered by mistake.

    Activate connected services on your vehicle

    FordPass remote features require your vehicle's modem to be active. In your vehicle, go to the SYNC touchscreen, tap Settings, then Connected Services or FordPass Connect, and follow the prompts to activate. You may need to have the vehicle running and in Park. The app will notify you when your vehicle is successfully linked, which can take a few minutes.

    Warning

    If your vehicle is older than 2017 or does not have a SYNC 3 or SYNC 4 system, remote features may not be available. Check the FordPass app's vehicle compatibility page for your specific model.

    Try remote start from the app

    On the app's home screen, you will see your vehicle with a set of control buttons. Tap the Remote Start button (it looks like a circular arrow). The app will ask you to confirm — tap "Start." Your vehicle's engine will start within about 30 seconds. You will receive a notification confirming the start. The car will run for 15 minutes and then shut off automatically unless you get in and use your key or fob.

    Quick Tip

    Remote start works best when your phone has a good cellular connection. If it fails the first time, wait 30 seconds and try again.

    Check door locks and vehicle status

    The app's home screen shows a summary of your vehicle status — locked or unlocked, fuel level, oil life, and tire pressure. Tap the Lock or Unlock button to change the door lock state remotely. These actions also confirm within about 30 seconds. The Vehicle Status section is useful for a quick check before leaving for work or a trip.

    Use Vehicle Locator to find where you parked

    If you forgot where you parked, tap the map icon or "Vehicle Location" in the app. It will show a map with a pin at the last location your vehicle's GPS recorded. Tap the pin for the exact address and distance from your current location. You can also tap "Get Directions" to have your phone's maps app navigate you back to the car.

    Quick Tip

    The location shown is where the vehicle was when it last had a GPS signal. In underground parking garages, the pin may show the entrance rather than the exact parking spot.

    The FordPass app turns your smartphone into a remote control for your Ford vehicle. Whether you want to warm up the car before a cold morning drive, check whether you locked the doors, or find where you parked in a busy lot, FordPass puts those controls right on your phone screen.

    FordPass works with most Ford vehicles from model year 2017 and newer that have Ford's connected vehicle technology (called FordPass Connect or SYNC Connect). Before you can use remote features, your vehicle needs to have an active connected services plan. New Ford vehicles usually come with a complimentary trial period — check your vehicle's owner materials or the Ford website for exact terms for your model year.

    Setting up the app takes about 10 minutes. You will create a FordPass account, enter your vehicle's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number — a 17-character code found on a sticker at the base of your windshield on the driver's side), and then link the app to your vehicle. Once linked, the app shows your vehicle's fuel or battery level, tire pressure, oil life, and door lock status at a glance.

    Remote start through the app works wherever you have a cell signal. The engine runs for a set time (usually 15 minutes) and uses your previously set climate settings. This means your car will be warm or cool before you get in. Remote lock and unlock work similarly and are useful if you are not sure whether you locked the car after parking.

    FordPass also includes a feature called Vehicle Locator that drops a pin on a map where you last parked. This is especially helpful in large parking garages or unfamiliar areas. If someone else drives your vehicle — such as a family member or a valet — the app can show you the vehicle's last known location.

    The app is free to download and the basic account features cost nothing. Some advanced features, such as extended remote start times or live vehicle tracking, may require a paid FordPass Connect subscription after the trial period ends. Check the Ford website or call your dealership for current pricing.
