How to Use iPhone Live Voicemail

Live Voicemail shows you a real-time text transcript of a voicemail as it's being left, so you can decide whether to pick up.

    1

Check if Live Voicemail is enabled

    ~16s
Go to SettingsPhoneLive Voicemail and confirm the toggle is turned on. This feature is on by default in iOS 17 and later. If you don't see "Live Voicemail" in your Phone settings, update your iPhone to the latest iOS version.
    2

Let a call go to voicemail

    ~15s
When you receive a call you don't want to answer right away, press the volume down button or tap "Decline" to send it to voicemail. The call goes to voicemail while your phone screen shows the Live Voicemail view.
    3

    Read the transcription

    ~16s
As the caller leaves their message, the words appear on your screen in real time — just like watching a text conversation. You can read what they're saying as they say it. The transcription is displayed large and clearly so you can read it at a glance.
    4

    Pick up if needed

    ~25s
If you decide the call is worth taking while the voicemail is being recorded, tap the green "Pick Up" button at the top of the screen. The call connects immediately and the caller is brought into a live conversation. This lets you screen calls without fully missing them.

    Quick Tip

This is especially useful for calls from unknown numbers — you can screen out robocalls while picking up calls from real people like doctors, repair companies, or delivery services.

    5

Listen to or read saved voicemails

    ~26s
After a voicemail is fully recorded, open the Phone app and tap "Voicemail" at the bottom right. All voicemails show a text transcription that you can read without playing the audio. Tap the play button to hear the audio if you want. Swipe left on a voicemail to delete it.

    Quick Tip

If the transcription missed something, tap the three dots on the voicemail and choose "Share" to send the audio file to yourself so you can listen carefully.

Live Voicemail is an iPhone feature introduced in iOS 17 that transcribes voicemail messages in real time as they're being recorded. When a call goes to voicemail, you can see the caller's message appear as text on your screen — word by word, as they say it — without picking up the phone.

This gives you the ability to decide whether the call is worth interrupting what you're doing. If you can see the message says "Hi, this is Dr. Johnson's office calling to confirm your appointment," you might want to tap "Pick Up" to take the call. If it turns out to be a robocall or spam, you can just let it finish without answering.

Live Voicemail works even if your voicemail is set up through your carrier's standard voicemail system. The transcription happens on your device — Apple doesn't receive or read your voicemail content.

The feature is available on iPhone running iOS 17 or later and requires a carrier that supports Visual Voicemail (all major US carriers do — AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and most regional carriers).

Live Voicemail is turned on by default in iOS 17 and later — you likely already have it without knowing.
