How to Control App Permissions on Your Phone

Stop apps from accessing your camera, location, and contacts without your knowledge.

    1

    What are app permissions

    ~17s
When you install an app, it may ask for access to things like your camera, microphone, location, contacts, or photos. Some of these make sense — a camera app needs camera access. But many apps ask for more than they need. You can review and change these permissions anytime.

    Review permissions on iPhone

    ~15s
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security. You will see categories like Location Services, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, Photos. Tap each one to see which apps have access and toggle off any that do not need it.

    Review permissions on Android

    ~15s
Go to Settings > Privacy > Permission Manager. Tap a permission type (Camera, Location, Microphone) to see which apps have access. Change any app to "Don't allow" or "Ask every time" if it does not need that permission.

    Permissions to watch carefully

    ~24s
Location: Only maps, weather, and ride-sharing apps truly need this. Set others to "Never" or "While Using." Camera & Microphone: Only apps you actively use for photos, video calls, or voice notes. Contacts: Very few apps need access to your contacts. If a flashlight app asks for contacts, that is a red flag.

    Warning

If an app stops working after you remove a permission, you can always grant it again. Start restrictive and loosen only if needed.
