How to Replace Printer Ink or Toner

Ink low? Here's how to replace ink cartridges on the most common home printers — HP, Epson, Canon, and Brother.

    1

    Find your printer model number

    ~15s
Look on the front or top of your printer for the model name and number (e.g., HP DeskJet 2720 or Canon PIXMA MG3650). You need this to buy the correct ink.
    2

    Buy the right ink cartridges

    ~16s
Search online for your printer model followed by "ink cartridge" or check the printer manual. You can buy from the manufacturer, Amazon, or shops like Argos and Currys.

    Quick Tip

Compatible (non-branded) cartridges are much cheaper and usually work just as well. Look for ones with good reviews.

    3

Open the printer and remove old cartridges

    ~15s
Turn on the printer and open the front panel or ink access door. The ink carriage will move to the center. Gently press down on the old cartridge to release it and pull it out.
    4

    Insert the new cartridge

    ~16s
Remove the protective tape or cap from the new cartridge. Slide it into the correct slot (colors are usually labelled) and press firmly until it clicks. Close the printer door.

    Warning

Do not touch the gold contacts or the ink nozzle on the cartridge. This can cause print quality problems.
