How to Set Up Your New Android Phone (Complete Beginner's Guide)

Everything you need to know to set up your new Android phone, step by step, from first power-on.

    1

    Turn on your Android phone

    ~17s
Press and hold the power button (usually on the right side of the phone) for a few seconds until the screen lights up. If nothing happens, your battery may be empty — plug in the charging cable that came in the box, wait about 15 minutes, and try again.
    2

    Choose your language

    ~15s
When the phone starts, it will ask you to pick a language. Scroll through the list and tap your preferred language. Then tap the arrow or "Start" button to continue. Next, choose your region or country.
    3

    Connect to WiFi

    ~24s
Your phone will scan for WiFi networks nearby. Find your home WiFi network name in the list and tap it. Enter your WiFi password carefully — it is case-sensitive (capital and lowercase letters matter). If you do not know your WiFi password, look for a sticker on the bottom or back of your internet router.

    Quick Tip

Your WiFi password is often printed on a label on your router. Look for "Network Key," "WiFi Password," or "WPA Key."

    4

Sign in with your Google account (or create one)

    ~30s
A Google account gives you access to the Play Store (for apps), Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, and more. If you already have a Gmail address, that is your Google account — enter it and your password. If you are new to Google, tap "Create account" and follow the steps to enter your name, choose an email address, and set a password. Write your password down and keep it somewhere safe.

    Warning

Only download apps from the Google Play Store. Apps from unknown sources can contain viruses or steal your personal information.

    5

Set up fingerprint or face unlock

    ~22s
Your phone will ask if you want to set up a fingerprint or face unlock. This lets you unlock your phone quickly and securely. For fingerprint: place your finger on the sensor (usually on the back, side, or under the screen) and lift and press repeatedly until it finishes scanning. You will also set a backup PIN in case the fingerprint does not work.
    6

Make text bigger and easier to read

    ~18s
Once setup is complete, let us make the screen easier to read. Go to Settings (the gear icon) > Display > Font size. Drag the slider to the right to make text bigger. On Samsung phones, you can also adjust "Screen zoom" to make everything on the screen larger, not just text.
    7

Transfer data from your old phone (optional)

    ~23s
If you are switching from an old phone, Android makes it easy to bring over your photos, contacts, and apps. During setup, the phone will ask "Copy apps & data." You can transfer wirelessly from another Android phone, or use a cable if one was included. If you are switching from an iPhone, download the "Switch to Android" app on your old iPhone first and follow the prompts.
    8

    Set up Google Assistant

    ~23s
Google Assistant is your voice helper. It can answer questions, set reminders, make calls, and more. During setup, your phone may ask you to say "Hey Google" a few times so it can learn your voice. Once set up, you can say "Hey Google, set a timer for 10 minutes" or "Hey Google, call Mom" anytime. You can also press and hold the power button on many phones to activate it.
    9

    Add emergency information

    ~18s
Go to Settings > Safety & emergency (or search for "emergency" in Settings). You can add emergency contacts and medical information here. This information can be accessed from your lock screen in an emergency, even if your phone is locked. Add at least one trusted family member or friend as an emergency contact.
    10

    Download essential apps

    ~33s
Open the Google Play Store (the colorful triangle icon). Tap the search bar at the top and type the name of an app you want. Here are some useful free apps to start with: - **WhatsApp** — free messaging and video calls - **Google Maps** — navigation and directions (probably already installed) - **Gmail** — email (probably already installed) - **YouTube** — videos (probably already installed) - **Your bank's app** — check your balance and pay bills Tap "Install" next to any app to download it.
