How to Set Up Your New iPhone (Complete Beginner's Guide)

Step-by-step instructions to set up your new iPhone from the moment you take it out of the box.

    1

    Turn on your iPhone

    ~19s
Press and hold the button on the right side of your iPhone until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen. This may take a few seconds. If nothing happens, your phone may need to charge first — plug it into the included charging cable and wall adapter, wait about 15 minutes, then try again.
    2

    Choose your language and region

    ~16s
When the "Hello" screen appears, swipe up (or press the Home button on older iPhones). Pick your language from the list — just tap it. Then choose your country or region. This tells your phone what language to use and what time zone you are in.
    3

    Connect to WiFi

    ~27s
Your iPhone will show a list of WiFi networks nearby. Find your home WiFi network name and tap it. Type in your WiFi password carefully — it is case-sensitive, meaning capital and lowercase letters matter. If you do not know your WiFi password, check the sticker on the bottom or back of your router (the box with blinking lights).

    Quick Tip

If you cannot find your WiFi password, it is often printed on a label on your internet router. Look for "Network Key," "WiFi Password," or "WPA Key."

    4

Sign in with your Apple ID (or create one)

    ~34s
An Apple ID is your personal account for everything Apple — the App Store, iCloud, FaceTime, and more. If you already have one (maybe from an iPad or old iPhone), tap "Sign In" and enter your email and password. If you are brand new to Apple, tap "Forgot password or don't have an Apple ID?" and then "Create a Free Apple ID." Follow the prompts to enter your name, birthday, and email address, and choose a password.

    Warning

Never share your Apple ID password with anyone, even if they claim to be from Apple. Apple will never call you to ask for your password.

    5

    Set up Face ID

    ~31s
Face ID lets you unlock your phone just by looking at it — no passwords needed. When prompted, tap "Continue" and slowly move your head in a circle so the camera can learn your face. You will do this twice. If you wear glasses, you can keep them on. After Face ID is set up, you will also create a 6-digit passcode as a backup.

    Quick Tip

Face ID works with glasses, hats, and scarves. It even works in the dark. You can add an "Alternate Appearance" later in Settings > Face ID & Passcode if you want.

    6

Make text bigger and easier to read

    ~24s
Once your iPhone is set up, let us make the text larger and clearer. Go to Settings (the gray gear icon) > Display & Brightness > Text Size. Drag the slider to the right to make text bigger. While you are here, also turn on "Bold Text" — this makes all the words on your phone thicker and easier to read. Your phone will restart briefly to apply bold text.
    7

Set up Siri — your voice assistant

    ~24s
Siri lets you control your phone with your voice. During setup, your iPhone will ask if you want to enable Siri. Tap "Continue" and follow the prompts to say a few phrases so Siri can learn your voice. Once set up, you can say "Hey Siri" (or just "Siri" on newer iPhones) to ask questions, set timers, make calls, and more. For example, try saying "Hey Siri, what is the weather today?"
    8

    Add emergency contacts

    ~22s
This is an important safety step. Open the Health app (white icon with a red heart). Tap your photo or initials in the top right, then tap "Medical ID." Tap "Edit" and scroll down to "Emergency Contacts." Tap the green plus sign (+) to add a family member or trusted friend. These contacts can be reached even when your phone is locked, which is critical in an emergency.
    9

    Download essential apps

    ~27s
Open the App Store (blue icon with a white "A"). Tap the Search tab at the bottom and type the name of an app you want. Here are some useful free apps to start with: - **WhatsApp** — free messaging and video calls - **Google Maps** — navigation and directions - **Gmail** — email - **YouTube** — videos - **Your bank's app** — check your balance and pay bills Tap "Get" next to any app, then confirm with Face ID or your passcode to download it.

Explore Assistive Access for a simpler experience

    ~24s
If you find the regular iPhone interface overwhelming, Apple offers a simpler mode called Assistive Access. It shows large buttons, bigger text, and only the apps you choose. To try it, go to Settings > Accessibility > Assistive Access and follow the setup wizard. You can always switch back to the regular view.

    Quick Tip

Consider enabling Assistive Access (Settings > Accessibility > Assistive Access) for a simpler, larger-button interface. Learn more at support.apple.com/guide/iphone

Learn more with free video tutorials

    ~21s
Apple has a YouTube channel with short, easy-to-follow videos on every iPhone feature. They are free and designed for beginners. You can also visit an Apple Store near you for free "Today at Apple" classes where staff will help you in person.
