How to Set Up a Roku Streaming Device

Roku is a small device that plugs into your TV and gives you access to Netflix, BBC iPlayer, YouTube, and hundreds more channels.

    1

    Unbox and check the contents

    ~15s
Your Roku comes with the Roku stick or box, an HDMI cable (or the stick plugs directly into the TV), a remote control, and batteries. Make sure you have all the pieces before you start.
    2

Connect the Roku to your TV

    ~18s
Plug the Roku into a spare HDMI port on the back or side of your TV. Plug the Roku's power cable into a wall outlet. Then use your TV remote to switch to the correct HDMI input — look for a button labeled "Input" or "Source" on your TV remote.
    3

    Follow the on-screen setup

    ~24s
The Roku will guide you through setup step by step. First, choose your language. Next, connect to your home Wi-Fi by selecting your network name and typing your Wi-Fi password. The Roku will then update its software, which takes a few minutes. Finally, you will create a free Roku account or sign in at roku.com/link.

    Quick Tip

Have your Wi-Fi password written down before you start — you will need to type it using the on-screen keyboard.

    4

    Add channels (apps) to watch

    ~15s
From the Roku home screen, select "Streaming Channels" to browse the Channel Store. Free channels include YouTube, Pluto TV, and Tubi. Paid services like Netflix and Disney+ are also available but require their own subscriptions.
    5

    Learn the Roku remote basics

    ~16s
Use the arrow buttons to move around the screen and press OK to select. The Home button always takes you back to the main menu. The star (*) button opens settings for whatever you are watching. Some remotes also have shortcut buttons for popular apps like Netflix.
