How to Set Up a Brand New Android Phone

Just got a new Android phone? This guide walks you through setup from power-on to ready-to-use.

Turn it on and choose your language

Press and hold the power button until the screen lights up. Choose your language and tap "Start" or the arrow to continue. If you have an old phone, you may be offered a transfer option — this copies your apps, photos, and settings to the new phone.

Connect to WiFi

Select your home WiFi network from the list and enter the password. A strong WiFi connection makes the rest of setup much faster since apps and updates will need to download.

Sign in with your Google account

Enter your Gmail address and password. If you do not have a Google account, tap "Create account." Your Google account connects: Gmail, Google Photos, Google Drive, and the Play Store. All your old apps and data can be restored from here.

Set up security

Choose a screen lock: PIN (recommended minimum 6 digits), fingerprint (if your phone has a sensor), or face unlock. Set up your fingerprint by pressing your finger on the sensor several times from different angles.

Customize your phone

The wizard will offer to: restore apps from your old phone, set up Google Assistant (voice helper), enable Find My Device (helps locate your phone if lost), and configure Google Pay. Turn on Find My Device — it is the most useful one if you ever lose your phone.

Quick Tip

Turn on Automatic Updates: Settings, System, Software Update. Also in Play Store: tap your profile, Settings, Network Preferences, Auto-update apps.
