How to Use Slack for Team Communication

Set up and navigate Slack for work, community, or family group communication.

    1

    What is Slack?

    ~15s
Slack is a messaging app for teams. Instead of long email chains, conversations happen in real-time channels organized by topic. Used by businesses, communities, and even families.
    2

    Join a workspace

    ~15s
You'll receive an invitation link or email. Click it to join. Create your profile with your name and photo. You'll see channels (group conversations) and direct messages.
    3

    Channels

    ~15s
Channels are group conversations organized by topic: #general, #project-updates, #random, #help. Join channels relevant to you. Click a channel name to enter and read/send messages.
    4

    Direct messages

    ~15s
Click the + next to Direct Messages to start a private conversation. You can message one person or create a small group. Direct messages are private between participants.
    5

    Mentions and notifications

    ~15s
Use @name to notify someone specific. Use @here to notify everyone currently online. Use @channel to notify everyone (use sparingly). Customize your notification settings to avoid overload.
    6

    Share files and links

    ~15s
Drag and drop files into a message, or click the + icon. Share links — Slack automatically shows previews. Use threads (click "Reply in thread") to keep conversations organized.
    7

    Essential shortcuts

    ~15s
Ctrl+K (+K on Mac): jump to any channel or person. Ctrl+F: search messages. /remind: set reminders. Shift+Enter ↵: new line without sending. These save significant time.
