How to Set Up a Streaming Device: Roku, Fire Stick & Chromecast

Get Netflix, YouTube, and more on your TV — set up and use Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, Chromecast, or Apple TV.

    1

    Choose a streaming device

    ~20s
Popular options: Roku Streaming Stick ($30-50, easiest to use), Amazon Fire TV Stick ($30-50, works great with Alexa), Chromecast with Google TV ($30-50, good if you use Google), Apple TV 4K ($130, best for iPhone/Mac users). All of them plug into your TV's HDMI port and connect to your Wi-Fi to stream apps like Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, and more.
    2

    Plug in and connect

    ~27s
Plug the device into any HDMI port on the back or side of your TV. Plug the power cable into a wall outlet. Switch your TV to the correct HDMI input using your TV remote (press "Input" or "Source" and select HDMI 1, 2, etc.). The setup screen will appear. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect to your Wi-Fi network and sign in or create an account.

    Quick Tip

Write down your Wi-Fi password before starting — you'll need to enter it during setup.

    3

    Install your favorite apps

    ~19s
After setup, browse the app/channel store on your device. Install free apps like YouTube, Pluto TV, and Tubi for free content. Install subscription apps like Netflix ($7-23/month), Hulu ($10-18/month), Disney+ ($10-14/month), and Amazon Prime Video ($9/month or included with Prime). Each app requires its own account — you may already have some through your cable or internet provider.
    4

    Use your remote

    ~20s
Most streaming remotes have: a navigation pad (up/down/left/right + select in center), a Home button (go back to the main screen), a Back button (go to previous screen), volume controls, and a voice button (hold it and speak to search for shows). Roku remotes may have shortcut buttons for Netflix, Disney+, etc. Fire Stick remotes work with "Alexa, play [show name]."

    Troubleshoot common issues

    ~22s
No picture: Make sure your TV is on the correct HDMI input. Try a different HDMI port. Buffering/loading: Move your streaming device closer to your Wi-Fi router, or try restarting your router. Remote not working: Replace batteries (AAA for most remotes). Re-pair the remote by holding the pairing button for 5 seconds. App crashes: Uninstall and reinstall the app, or restart the device (SettingsSystemRestart).
