If you are buying a new phone, TracFone sells phones (called "smartphones" and "basic phones") at Walmart, Target, and other major stores starting around $20 to $25. If you already have an unlocked phone, you can buy just a TracFone SIM card — a small chip that goes inside your phone — for under $1 at the same stores. The SIM card package includes activation instructions.

Activate your phone or SIM

Activation can be done online at tracfone.com, through the TracFone app, or by calling 1-800-867-7183. You will need the serial number (called the IMEI or MEID) from your phone — it is usually printed on a sticker inside the battery compartment or under Settings > About Phone. During activation, you will choose a phone number or transfer your existing number, and enter a service plan or airtime card code if you purchased one.

Add a service plan or airtime card

TracFone offers two ways to add service. The first is a monthly plan — you pay a set amount each month for a bundle of minutes, texts, and data. The second is an "airtime card" — a physical card sold at retailers with a code that adds minutes and days of service when you scratch off and enter the code. Search "My TracFone" in the App Store or Google Play Store and install it. Sign in with your TracFone account (created during activation). The app shows your current balance of minutes, texts, and data, your plan expiration date, and buttons to add a new plan or airtime. Checking the app once a week helps you avoid unexpected service interruptions.

TracFone plans expire on a set date. If you do not renew before the expiration, you may lose remaining minutes and your phone number could be reassigned. Set a reminder a few days before your plan expires.

Transfer your number from another carrier (optional)

If you want to keep your current phone number when switching to TracFone, start the transfer during activation. Choose "Keep my current number" and have your old carrier account number and PIN ready. The process usually takes one to two business days. Your old service cancels automatically once the transfer completes.
