Get a TracFone phone or SIM card

    ~36s
If you are buying a new phone, TracFone sells phones (called "smartphones" and "basic phones") at Walmart, Target, and other major stores starting around $20 to $25. If you already have an unlocked phone, you can buy just a TracFone SIM card — a small chip that goes inside your phone — for under $1 at the same stores. The SIM card package includes activation instructions.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: When buying a TracFone SIM, look for the card labeled for the network you want — BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) SIM cards come in different network versions. Check tracfone.com to confirm which SIM works best with your existing phone and your area.

    2

    Activate your phone or SIM

    ~24s
Activation can be done online at tracfone.com, through the TracFone app, or by calling 1-800-867-7183. You will need the serial number (called the IMEI or MEID) from your phone — it is usually printed on a sticker inside the battery compartment or under Settings > About Phone. During activation, you will choose a phone number or transfer your existing number, and enter a service plan or airtime card code if you purchased one.
    3

Add a service plan or airtime card

    ~24s
TracFone offers two ways to add service. The first is a monthly plan — you pay a set amount each month for a bundle of minutes, texts, and data. The second is an "airtime card" — a physical card sold at retailers with a code that adds minutes and days of service when you scratch off and enter the code. Monthly plans are generally the better value for regular users.
    4

    Download the My TracFone app

    ~31s
Search "My TracFone" in the App Store or Google Play Store and install it. Sign in with your TracFone account (created during activation). The app shows your current balance of minutes, texts, and data, your plan expiration date, and buttons to add a new plan or airtime. Checking the app once a week helps you avoid unexpected service interruptions.

    Warning

TracFone plans expire on a set date. If you do not renew before the expiration, you may lose remaining minutes and your phone number could be reassigned. Set a reminder a few days before your plan expires.

    5

Transfer your number from another carrier (optional)

    ~18s
If you want to keep your current phone number when switching to TracFone, start the transfer during activation. Choose "Keep my current number" and have your old carrier account number and PIN ready. The process usually takes one to two business days. Your old service cancels automatically once the transfer completes.

TracFone is one of the oldest and most widely available prepaid phone services in the United States. It is a "no-contract" service, meaning you pay for your phone service in advance — by buying minutes, texts, and data — rather than signing a monthly contract and getting a bill afterward. If you stop paying, your service stops, but you owe nothing more.

TracFone is popular with people who want to control their phone spending, do not need unlimited everything, or prefer not to be tied to a long-term carrier agreement. It is also popular as a first phone for teenagers and as a simple, affordable option for people who mainly make calls and send texts without heavy data use.

TracFone phones and SIM cards are sold at major retailers including Walmart, Target, CVS, and Dollar General, as well as online at tracfone.com. You can bring your own phone to TracFone if it is compatible — the company supports phones from most major manufacturers.

Service plans vary from simple 30-day plans with a set amount of minutes and data to unlimited monthly plans. TracFone uses networks from Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile depending on which SIM card or phone you have, so coverage is generally good in most parts of the country.

One important thing to know: TracFone minutes and plans expire after a certain number of days. If you do not add a new plan before your current one expires, you may lose unused minutes and your service may be interrupted. The TracFone app and your account at tracfone.com make it easy to check your balance and renew before that happens.
