    How to Transfer Data to a New PC

    Move your files, settings, and apps from your old Windows PC to a new one.

    Use OneDrive sync

    Sign in with the same Microsoft account on both PCs. OneDrive synced files will appear automatically.

    Use an external drive

    Copy files from your old PC to an external hard drive, then plug it into the new PC and copy them over.

    Quick Tip

    External hard drives with 1TB or more of storage cost under 50 dollars and are reusable for backups afterwards.

    Use Windows Backup

    On your old PC, use SettingsAccountsWindows Backup to back up apps, settings, and files.

    Transfer over your local network

    Connect both PCs to the same network and use Nearby Sharing or a shared folder to transfer files.

    Apps typically need to be reinstalled. Download them from the Microsoft Store or original websites.

    Warning

    Write down the names of all applications you use on your old PC before you start. It is easy to forget one until you need it.
