AirDrop is Apple's wireless sharing feature that lets you send photos, videos, documents, links, contacts, and more between Apple devices — iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It uses Bluetooth and WiFi to transfer files directly between devices, and it is fast. A photo transfers in about one second.
Both devices need to have WiFi and Bluetooth turned on (they do not need to be connected to the same WiFi network). AirDrop works when devices are within about 30 feet of each other.
Before sending, make sure the receiving device has AirDrop turned on and set to receive. On iPhone: open Control Center (swipe down from the top-right corner). Press and hold the network settings card (the area with WiFi and Bluetooth icons). Tap AirDrop. Choose "Contacts Only" (receive from people in your contacts) or "Everyone for 10 Minutes" (receive from any nearby Apple device).
To send a file via AirDrop, find what you want to share. For a photo: open the Photos app, select the photo (or multiple photos), tap the share button (the square with an upward arrow). In the AirDrop section, you will see icons for nearby Apple devices. Tap the person or device you want to send to.
The receiving device shows a notification asking to accept or decline. Once they tap "Accept," the file transfers immediately. Photos go to the Photos app, documents go to the Files app, links open in Safari, and contacts go to the Contacts app.
AirDrop works with almost anything you can share on your iPhone: photos, videos, websites, map locations, contacts, voice memos, app links, and documents. If you see a share button, you can likely use AirDrop.
Privacy tip: set AirDrop to "Contacts Only" when you are in public places. The "Everyone" setting means strangers nearby can see your device and potentially send you unwanted content.
