    How to Use Time Machine Backup on Mac

    Set up automatic backups with Time Machine to protect all your files.

    Connect an external drive

    Plug in an external hard drive or SSD. macOS may ask if you want to use it for Time Machine.

    Quick Tip

    For Time Machine, a drive at least twice the size of your Mac's storage is recommended. A 1TB external drive works for most people.

    Set up Time Machine

    Go to System SettingsGeneralTime MachineAdd Backup Disk. Select your external drive.

    Start the first backup

    Time Machine begins backing up automatically. The first backup may take a while depending on your data.

    Warning

    Do not disconnect the external drive during the first backup. It can take several hours depending on how much data you have.

    Restore files

    Click the Time Machine icon in the menu barBrowse Time Machine Backups to navigate through past versions.

    Exclude folders

    In Time Machine settings, click Options to exclude large folders you don't need backed up.
