Getting Started with Google Assistant on Android

Google Assistant is built into your Android phone and can help you set reminders, answer questions, make calls, and control apps with just your voice.

    1

    Activate Google Assistant

    ~15s
Say "Hey Google" (if set up) or press and hold the Home button. On newer Android phones, you can also swipe up from the bottom corner. Wait for the colored dots to appear before speaking.
    2

Set up "Hey Google" voice activation

    ~18s
Open the Google app, tap your profile photo in the top right > Settings > Voice > Voice Match > set up "Hey Google." Follow the prompts to train it to recognize your voice. Once done, you can activate Google Assistant hands-free from anywhere.

    Try these voice commands

Some useful things to ask: "Hey Google, call [name]" — "Hey Google, send a text to [name] saying I'll be late" — "Hey Google, set an alarm for 7am tomorrow" — "Hey Google, remind me to take my medication at 8pm every day" — "Hey Google, what's the weather this weekend?" — "Hey Google, navigate to [address]" — "Hey Google, turn on flashlight" — "Hey Google, set a timer for 10 minutes."

If Google Assistant doesn't understand you

    ~16s
Speak slowly and clearly. Make sure your microphone is not blocked by your hand or a case. If it mishears a contact name, try saying the full name. You can also type your request — tap the keyboard icon in the Google Assistant window.
    5

Turn off Google Assistant if needed

    ~15s
If you find it activates by accident, go to Settings > Google > Account Services > Search, Assistant & Voice > Google Assistant > General and toggle it off. You can always turn it back on the same way.
