How to Block Spam Calls on Android

Stop nuisance callers in their tracks with Android's built-in call blocking and Google's spam protection.

    1

    Turn on Google spam protection

    ~18s
Open the Phone app on your Android. Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, then tap Settings > Caller ID & Spam. Turn on "Filter spam calls." Google will automatically identify and silence calls that look like spam before your phone rings.

    Quick Tip

Google's guide to blocking calls on Android is at support.google.com/phoneapp/answer/6325463

    2

    Block a specific number

    ~16s
Open the Phone app and tap "Recents." Find the number you want to block. Tap and hold on the number (or tap the three-dot menu next to it) and select "Block number." Future calls from this number will be declined automatically and will not ring your phone.
    3

Screen calls with Google Assistant (Pixel phones)

    ~17s
On Google Pixel phones, when an unknown number calls, tap "Screen call." Google Assistant will answer on your behalf, ask who is calling and why, and show you the caller's response on your screen in real time. You then decide whether to pick up or hang up.
    4

Register on the National Do Not Call Registry

    ~21s
Visit DoNotCall.gov or call 1-888-382-1222 to register your number for free. Most legitimate companies must stop calling you within 31 days. Registration never expires — you only need to do it once.

    Quick Tip

If you still receive calls after 31 days of registering, report them at DoNotCall.gov. These are likely scammers, which you can also report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

    5

    Install a free call-blocking app

    ~21s
Download a free app like Hiya Caller ID & Block or Nomorobo from the Google Play Store. These apps recognize spam numbers before you answer. Open the app and follow its setup instructions to start filtering calls.

    Warning

No app can block every spam call — scammers constantly rotate numbers. Combining Google spam protection with a blocking app gives you the strongest defense.
